Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) is a sudden, extremely strong electromagnetic radiation that can cause serious damage to electronic equipment and communication systems. In order to protect electronic devices in PCBA from EMP, the following protective measures can be taken:
1. Metal Casing and Shielding:
Shielding design: PCBA can be placed inside a metal enclosure to provide electromagnetic shielding. This housing must be made of a material that is impermeable to electromagnetic waves, such as aluminum or nickel.
Connectivity: Ensure good electrical connections between parts within the enclosure to maintain shielding continuity.
Doors and openings: Any doors or openings where cables enter or exit the enclosure should be connected by a shield to prevent EMP waves from entering.
2. Protection of Power Supply and Communication Lines:
Filter: Install a power line filter to reduce the possibility of EMP waves being transmitted into the power line.
Transient voltage suppressors: Use transient voltage suppressors, such as lightning arresters, to protect power lines and communication lines against overvoltage.
Cable shielding: Use shielded cables to connect PCBA and external devices to reduce electromagnetic wave interference.
3. Ground Wire and Grounding:
Good Grounding: Make sure the PCBA's metal casing and all shielding components are properly grounded to dissipate the energy of the EMP wave.
Ground Grid: Design a ground grid within the layers of the PCBA to ensure good electrical grounding.
4. Backup Power Supply:
Backup power supply: Integrate backup power supply, such as an uninterruptible power supply (UPS), into the device to ensure continuous power supply during an EMP event.
5. Stay Away From Potential EMP Sources:
Physical location: Position the PCBA far enough away from potential EMP sources, such as lightning strikes or nuclear explosions, to mitigate potential EMP threats.
6. Testing and Certification:
EMP test: After the PCBA design and manufacturing is completed, EMP test is performed to verify its protective effect.
Comply with standards: Ensure that the PCBA is designed and manufactured in compliance with relevant EMP protection standards and specifications.
EMP protection is one of the important measures to protect critical electronic equipment from electromagnetic interference and emergencies. Depending on the application needs, different levels of protection can employ different measures, from simple shielding to more complex backup power supplies and circuit designs. In PCBA manufacturing, especially for military, aerospace and critical infrastructure applications, EMP protection is often indispensable.
